Appreciative Inquiry

Appreciative Inquiry

In every organisation or team, no matter how dysfunctional, there are some things that are working well, which get good results, and which motivate people. Appreciative Inquiry is a philosophy of change based on identifying these things and doing more of them, rather than looking for problems and trying to solve them.

The aim is to encourage ‘generative thinking’ which is not restricted by the same assumptions that gave rise to the problems.

We can’t ignore problems. We just need to approach them from the other side.

Thomas H White, President, GTE Telephone Operations, quoted in Appreciative Inquiry handbook by Cooperrider, Whitney and Stavros.
