About the author

Pete draws on over 24 years of direct involvement with health and safety in both the public and private sector, including Shell International, the Open University and Local Government.  

During his time with Shell, Pete was the Lead Health, Safety and Environment Adviser with Shell Real Estate Services managing the provision of an integrated Health, Safety and Environment Management System and providing advice and consultancy services in the areas of real estate, property and facilities management. His skill base includes the provision of policies and procedures based on the ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001 standards.

He specialises in the development and implementation of bespoke Health and Safety Management Systems that link with a company’s existing management framework. An experienced auditor, he has conducted health and safety audits of large and medium sized companies in the UK, Europe and the Far East.

Pete started his working career in aircraft electrical engineering, and since moving into Health and Safety Management he has advised companies involved in property and facilities management, finance, commerce, higher education and museums.

When working with clients Pete aims to dispel the myth that health and safety has to be complex and bureaucratic. He promotes the concept that compliance, plus management commitment to staff welfare is the way to gain ownership at all levels and develop a health and safety management system that is not an expensive overhead but actively works for the company. 

Pete is a Chartered Safety and Health Practitioner, Graduate of the Institution of Fire Engineers and a registered European Occupational Safety and Health Manager. He is a Licentiate of the City & Guilds of London Institute and holds approved qualifications in health and safety auditing, environmental management and food hygiene.
